Cleveland continued its revenge tour on Friday night with a domineering 69-6 win over South Central at home.
The Rams now sit at 3-0 and have allowed twenty points this season. The win was led by their defense who forced three turnovers and scored once. The strong defensive effort was supported by the special teams that scored twice. The big factor for both sides was Keyshawn Monk.
The senior safety ran a 54 yard punt return to the end zone. Monk also picked off a end zone pass and finished with 10 tackles with two for a loss. The opposite side safety, senior Steven Elliot II, paced the team with 12 tackles, a sack and had a 21 yard interception return for a score.
Senior linebacker Lenix Martinez also got a chance to score after he blocked a punt in the second quarter. Martinez also tallied eight tackles.
The defensive output overshadowed the nearly flawless performance from senior quarterback Skyler Locklear. Locklear, an Austin Peay commit, completed three of four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Locklear also carried the ball four times for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
One of the more stats, the Rams only ran 20 plays to score 69 points. UNC commit and two-time reigning WJG Sports Player of the Year Omarion Hampton touched the ball only once for a 12-yard run. It was the first game Hampton hadn’t scored in since September 20, 2019 against Cardinal Gibbons (16 games). Hampton did have an amazing 25 yard reception called back as well.
Friday also marked the return of sophomore Cam Goins back to action after a shoulder injury had him sidelined since the state championship game last year. Goins became a huge breathe of fresh air last season when Hampton went down with a broken ankle this spring. Goins had one catch for 25 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for 27 yards in his return.
The loss dropped the Falcons to 0-2. The Falcons hope to get their first win of the season September 17 against Northside Jacksonville.
The Rams will start conference play against Corinth Holders on September 17.
